Over the years fitness has changed a great deal. There has been a movement away from the static, single joint movements like the arm curl, to multi-joint engaging forms of training. On of the types of training that has taken off is kettlebell training. Some other forms of training that have seen more people participating in are TRX (suspension training), weighted stretching, squatting, deadlifting and more.  If you are looking to take your Home Gym to the next level then read on.

Full body workouts like the ones mentioned above allow us to using all of our muscles together rather than in an isolated movement. The result is that we produce more growth hormone and testosterone (triggering greater muscle growth) and that we build a more stable and functional body.

The problem is that this type of training often doesn’t extend to the home gym. It’s not easy to fit a squat rack in your front room… so what can you do?

I have listed below several items that will allow you to build a functional, unique, and awesome home gym.

Kettlebell

The kettlebell will make your home workouts more functional.  Using a kettlebell will provide a more dynamic workout by moving the center of gravity in different ways.  It will also immediately challenge you!

What’s more, is that kettlebell training allows you to perform movements like squats, deadlifts and more that you couldn’t train on your own otherwise.

Parallel Bars

Parallel bars are a simple tool that everyone can use no matter if your a beginner or a seasoned trainer.  At a cost of os usually around $40 you will be able to perform exercises like dips, hand stands, inverted pushups, neutral grip pullups, and many more! They’re fun, easy to store and build incredibly dynamic strength.

Gymnastic Rings (Suspension Straps)

Gymnastic rings or suspension straps can be used for many of the same exercises as parallel bars. The big difference is that you have to activate many more support muscle fibers because you’ll have to balance them and hold them steady while you train. If you were to purchase TRX suspension straps it could get pretty costly.  But the great thing is that you can create your own using tie down straps and climber carabiners for much less.

Balance Board

If you want to make any movement more challenging, more functional and more interesting then simply perform it while standing on a balance board. This will force you to balance while also moving the weight, which is much more challenging for your entire body.

Rope

A rope can be used for all manner of exercises. One of the simplest ways to train with it is to hang it over a pull up bar and then perform neutral grip pull ups with it. This will build grip strength as well as allowing you to train your biceps and lats. Otherwise, you can perform rows or even wrap it around your weights and pick them up that way!
